2025 Western BOP Lefties Golf Tournaments. Weather was the main influencer of the events at Whakatane and Mount Maunganui. Torrential rain and gales force winds forced the Friday cancellation of the Whakatane Saturday round on 28th June 2025. Of course the day actually became fine. The Sunday 29th June prediction for Mount Maunganui was for fine weather, but this was off the mark. It was cold, windy, and, at times, a little damp. 27 players took to the course after first spending some time on the recently developed extensive putting area alongside the new build Driving range (to be opened in July). Notable performances were the 41 Stableford points by Tony Horsfall (Ohope), 37 stablefords by Trevor Hayes (Ohope) and Andrew Davis (Hauraki) and 78 Gross by Troy Marshall (Omanu). Tony Horsfall (Ohope) won the 2025 Alan Elliott Stableford trophy with 41 points. Women’s scoring indicated the trying conditions, right-hander Jo Ann Neylon (Omanu) a good 34 points and Rika Batters (Whangamata) 31 points, followed by Jan Davis (Hauraki) 25 points. The 2 leftie women, Alison Keane (Hauraki) and Janelle Lewis (Lincoln) both scored 27 points. The weather aside, the loss of Golf 360 as a sponsor was an unexpected challenge. However, Eves Real Estate (Daniel Dickison) stayed with us, did Mount Maunganui Golf Club, Whakatane Golf Club and the valued support of NALGNZ, ensuring the event could be held. A pleasing development is the positive support from the Manager of The Whakatane Golf Club who has indicated keen support for our event in 2026. The Manager has also accepted my proposal to hold a Lefties round on August 1st, immediately before the Ohope Lefties weekend. We look forward to this happening.
