Western BOP Lefties Golf Saturday 1st July Fairview and Sunday 2nd July 2023 Maunganui. Unsettled, wet and windy weather saw major changes to the Saturday golf at Fairview. Beginning to look like 18 holes, then the weather saw the Fairview Golf Course start at 18 holes play, then reduce to 9 holes Friday and finally, after overnight rain for the to be course was closed. Greens flooded and totally unplayable. Mount Maunganui Golf course presented a different challenge for the Sunday round. Strong winds, showers and cold temperatures were predicted and arrived but so did the sun - at times. Despite the inclement weather and the uncertainty with changing plans, a full field of 44 registered players turned out. Fantastic to see the efforts made by the 44 players to play and all finish their rounds. This was most pleasing for the Sponsors - Golf 360 (Scott Pickett), Eves Real Estate (Daniel Dickison), Mount Maunganui Golf Club and NZLGNZ who remained supportive and contributed to the success of the Lefties Day of golf. 26 clubs represented, included - Janelle & Darren Lewis from Lincoln (South Island) , - Audrey& Nigel Messenger and Tai & Alex Walters - Te Marua plus regulars from Napier, New Plymouth, Auckland, the Waikato plus the BOP making for some interesting golf and results. Great to have a number of players new to the BOP Lefties Tournament, the golf experience will see them return next year. Features of the tournament were:
Winner of the Ace Elliott Trophy (Best Stableford) won by Wetini Mokomoko (Ohope) with another very good performance - 40 points winning for the 2nd time in 4 years.
77 Gross scores recorded by Tai Walters (Te Marua) saw him win “by countback” from and Stephen Leatherland (Ngaruawahia) also with a 77 gross.
