Western BOP Lefties Golf. Ray Horsfall. Fairview Golf Course. 2nd July 2022
2nd July 2022, dawned fine but with a very cool wind for the 34 players to compete on the well-presented Fairview Golf Course -Katikati. After adjusting to a drop of 2 shots from handicap index rating most players found the course a stern challenge with only a few rising to the challenge. Only 6 scoring better than 34 points.
Gross - Stephen Leatherland - Ngaruawahia) (+2) returned the leading gross of 75 followed by 12 handicapper Barry Mathews with a sharp (77) and 6 handicappers[RW1] Tony Stowers (Te Aroha) – 77.
Stableford - saw Barry Mathews (Titirangi) lead the field with an excellent 40 points, followed by Jamie Lock (Te Aroha) & Robert MacCartain (RNZAF) and Garry Pellett (Ohope Beach Golf Links) with 37s. The balance of the field – 13 players scored between 21 and 29 stablefords and 15 between 30 and 34 points. 3 Women competed. Hauraki Player – Alison Keane scoring 28 points followed by Ngaruawahia players Sally Roundhill & (leftie) Kore Hema both with 24 points.
Mount Maunganui Golf Course Sunday 3rd July 2022.
Fine weather continued providing an excellent golfing day, an excellent course and club facilities welcomed the 35 players. The strong sharp wind persisted keeping players cool, the speed of the greens proving a test. Handicaps were close to player handicap index ratings; however, this only saw a slight improvement in the scoring. Only 5 players scored 34 or better points. Gross: Stephen Leatherland (Ngaruawahia) –off 0 – scored 81 a bit outside his Saturday score of 75 at Fairview.
Stableford: Wayne Hughes (Napier Golf Club) won the Alan (Ace) Elliott Trophy with the best stableford of 38 points. Next best on 35 points were Bruce Mehrtens (Fielding) and Doc Murray (Renner Park). 24 players could only manage between 21 and 29 stableford points.
4 Women competed with Kore Hema (Ngaruawahia) on 28 Points, Sally Roundhill on 26 and Jenni Mathews on 22. Late withdrawals of regulars Bill Burt, Geoff Ingram and Matt Brown (2021 “ACE” trophy winner) reducing the field. Great to have so many new players to these events 2 x 2022 tournaments, which along with the fantastic weather, excellent golf courses and facilities could see popular 2023 and increased turnouts. Special appreciation for the support from sponsors Golf 360, Daniel Dickison (Eves Real Estate), Mount Maunganui Golf Club and NALGNZ who contributed to the success of the events.
