The 38th National Left-Handed Golf Championships hosted by Napier Golf Club, Waiohiki, 2025.
Leading up to the Golf Championship, the greenkeepers worked tirelessly to get the golf course in pristine tournament condition. It revealed itself throughout the four days of golf. Narrow fairway entries into the greens, thick lush green rough, medium to fast-paced putting greens with testing sloping hole placements and almost every hole had a dogleg to contend with. The daily results showed who was struggling and who managed the testing condition of the course.
This event, after all, is a National Golf Championship to evaluate all abilities, and the Napier Golf Club provided the challenge from Monday the 7th to Thursday the 10th of April 2025.
REGISTRATIONS
Registrations opened between 10.00 am and 5.00 pm on Sunday, April 6. Players reported upstairs in the main clubhouse, welcomed by the tournament committee. There were some latecomers, a family bereavement, and a couple of withdrawals due to Achilles injuries, giving us a total of 88 registered players.
They received a programme, tournament shirt (if ordered prior), event lanyard (shown below left) for the player and badge for their partner, a goodie bag full of Hawkes Bay fruit and a bottle of water to wash it all down. Their pre-paid Monster Raffle numbers (prizes shown above were chosen from the 300 numbers available.
HOLE IN ONE
Congratulations to Andrew Rigby of Napier (pictured left), who hit the perfect tee shot on the difficult 15th hole to score an ace. It is Andrew’s first Hole-in-One.
PRACTICE ROUND
Sunday was the official practice day, with all facilities open and available to use. Prior bookings were needed to make a booking. Unfortunately, there were insufficient golf carts available for all our players who had booked and paid for a golf cart. The committee was caught off guard with the number of golf carts requested, as the Club only had a limited number of carts available, also, there was insufficient room to store any extra golf carts which would need their batteries charged. This led to 98% of booked carts being shared. We did our best to accommodate most players, as the pairings with golf carts were determined by the daily draws. We wanted everyone to play with someone different every day.
OFFICIAL WELCOME AND AGM
The official tournament welcome took place at 5.30 pm on Sunday, April 6th, introduced by the Men’s Club Captain, who stood in for the Club President. He spoke about the two years of recovery from cyclone Gabrielle, which was undertaken by over 200 volunteers, sometimes daily.
There were photos displayed for those who were interested to compare how far the club had come. The Napier Golf Club received an Award from Golf NZ as “Club of the Year” for 2023/24 and a “Top 100 Favourite Golf Course in the World for 2025” from Golf Digest. A tribute to their tenacity in their cyclone recovery. After the welcome, food and drinks were served, followed by the NALG AGM and Special General Meeting.

All Rounds began at 8.20 am from the 1st and 10th tees. Players reported to the (little black box) Tournament Starters Office before their tee time. Scorecards were presented on the tee. This tournament was run by Golf Genius and the printed scorecards were different. This caught players off guard, and it proved to be problematic as the completed cards showed when handed in. Some were shocking: numbers got mixed up with player and marker, we couldn’t read some numbers, there were scribbled out numbers, the marker didn’t write in their name, plus many other peculiarities. This scorecard was something new for many of our players.
