A wonderful crowd turned up in Ashburton for our 29th Nationals. A very good team from Australia (18) players from Victoria, and Ballina (Chris and Dot Rose) and the others we love seeing year after year. We watched the weather forecasts anxiously prior to leaving Auckland, however, although the welcome was warm. The weather was not, and most days we had light rain, which made the course very wet and long. A new experience for our Australian visitors. Ken Shea prevailed in the senior gross once again, playing solidly each day. Jamie Frewen from Alexandra, although working through a major personal health problem, played some outstanding golf winning the Bob Charles and Lionel Kelly prizes. Jamie we all wish you well and hope you can overcome your illness. Hilary Lovett from Ashburton led all the way in the Ladies gross winning easily from Jan Davies and Audrey Messenger. Grateful thanks to Dee Murdoch the Ashburton Club Secretary who kept everybody up to date with Tournament news. The Ashburton Club were outstanding in hosting our Tournament, and we were very pleased to receive the lovely soup that appeared half way around each day, what a reviver! We were delighted to announce on the final night that life membership had been conferred upon Nigel Messenger.
